What is the ETKO Cruelty Free Standard?
With the rise of consumer awareness regarding animal rights, the claim "not tested on animals" has become one of the most sought-after features in the market. However, this claim needs to transcend being a mere marketing tool on packaging and become a verifiable fact. The ETKO Cruelty Free Standard is an independent certification system proving that no animal testing has been conducted at any stage of the formulation, development, or production of cosmetic, personal care, and household cleaning products—from raw ingredients to the final product. This standard makes brands' ethical manufacturing processes transparent, ensuring they offer consumers 100% reliable, cruelty-free products.
Key Technical Criteria of ETKO Cruelty Free Certification
The Cruelty Free standard goes beyond the finished product to audit the entire supply chain and raw material network. The technical framework can be summarized as follows:
Animal Testing Ban:
The final product to be certified, its formulation, and none of its ingredients (even at the raw material level) may be tested on animals by the company or any third-party laboratories.
To prove product safety, modern alternative testing methods must be utilized instead of animal testing. These include in vitro (cell culture in a lab environment) tests, computer modeling (in silico), or human volunteer trials.
Supply Chain Control and Fixed Cut-Off Date:
The strongest technical aspect of the standard is supply chain auditing. The manufacturing company must obtain official declarations and documentation from its raw material suppliers stating that "this raw material has not been tested on animals after a specific date (fixed cut-off date)."
Managing the Difference Between Vegan and Cruelty Free:
"Cruelty Free" does not necessarily mean the product is "Vegan." An ETKO Cruelty Free certified product may contain animal-derived by-products such as beeswax, honey, milk, or lanolin, provided they are never tested on animals. (If the product contains no animal ingredients AND is not tested on animals, it falls under the ETKO Vegan certification).
Global Market Compliance:
A brand cannot allow its products to be tested on animals for the purpose of exporting to countries where animal testing is legally required by certain market regulations. If such testing is detected, the certification is immediately revoked.
Who this standard is for
The ETKO Cruelty Free Standard is for companies that need to demonstrate the product and relevant ingredients are not tested on animals, under the standard’s rules. It does not prove the formula is vegan or organic.
What is certified
- Finished products submitted for the cruelty-free claim
- Ingredient testing status and supplier declarations
- Commissioned tests by the brand, manufacturer, or third parties after a cut-off date defined in the standard
- Markets of sale where animal testing may still be required by law — these create a conflict that must be resolved before claiming
What this standard does not cover
- Absence of animal-derived ingredients (vegan standard)
- COSMOS organic/natural chemistry
- Pharmaceutical or medical-device regulations
Questions buyers and operators usually ask
We sell in a market that still requires animal testing for cosmetics. Can we be cruelty-free?
If the product or ingredients are tested on animals to enter that market, that usually conflicts with a cruelty-free claim. Map countries of sale before applying.
Does a supplier’s “not tested on animals” logo on the drum suffice?
Auditors look for declarations that match the standard’s wording and date rules, plus your own policy that you do not commission tests. A decorative logo on packaging is not a dossier.
Is cruelty-free the same as Leaping Bunny or PETA?
They are different schemes with different rules and logos. Do not print another programme’s mark on the basis of an ETKO cruelty-free certificate, or the reverse.
Are household cleaners in scope?
If the product type is listed in the current standard. Confirm detergents versus cosmetics versus other chemical products before quoting the claim to a retailer.
What to have ready before the audit
- List of finished SKUs and countries of sale
- Ingredient list with supplier testing declarations
- Company policy on animal testing and any historical tests
- Contracts with laboratories
- Artwork for the ETKO cruelty-free mark only
Frequent findings
- Selling in a legally required animal-test market while claiming cruelty-free
- Using vegan evidence as cruelty-free evidence
- A new ingredient added without a testing declaration
- Printing a third-party animal-test logo you are not licensed to use
